Hello all! I am currently on hour 60 of a 72 hour fast, so I thought I would talk a little bit about my experience and some fasting benefits or reasons.

Me, my fiancé, my future mother in law, and one of our best friends have been doing this fast together. So far we have lost between 7-11 pounds each in our 60 hours. We have also been hydrating like crazy!!

I would have to say hour 43 was the most difficult for me. It was mid afternoon at work and my typical snack time. Drinking water when feeling hungry really helped, along with staying busy! I experienced off and on hunger with my stomach growling at me from time to time. I was more tired towards the end of the day. I was LESS irritable (which I thought would be the other way around lol)!

While all 4 of us had different reasons for the fast, I want to explore some benefits from a religious standpoint and for health reasons.

Doing a fast for religious reasons: the thought behind this is to draw near to God. During this time you are surrendering yourself to God and listening for his direction. It is also about the determination to do Gods will.

Doing a fast for health benefits: the biggest benefit for doing a 72 hour fast is for autophagy. Autophagy is when the body gets rid of damaged or weak cells. A 72 hour fast can help with brain health, decreased inflammation, weight loss (burning fat for energy), and hormone balancing. This happens in 3 phases:

            Decreasing inflammation

            Increasing metabolism

            Autophagy

*This information so far has been for a 72 hour fast*

The other kind of fasting is the very popular Intermittent Fasting. While some of these benefits are the same I will outline a couple of the big ones again. Intermittent fasting is usually about 16 hours of a fast and eating your meals in the remaining 8 hours of the day.

Intermittent fasting can help to improve thinking and memory as well as heart health. Blood pressure and resting heart rate are the two heart benefits that come with this type of fasting. Intermittent fasting helps your body to burn fat while retaining muscle, and this is how it can help you to lose weight.

Both types of fasting have been researched for many years on the effectiveness. This blog is simply to provide information - not to give diet or weight loss advice. If you are 18 years or younger, pregnant, breastfeeding, have type 1 diabetes, or have an eating disorder PLEASE consult a doctor before starting a fast. Also if you have any questions or concerns, reach out to your doctor.

As chiropractors we work a lot with foot and ankle pain. This can include chronic pain, arthritis, sprained ankles, and more. Sometimes we check these joints to make sure that they are not contributing to lower back pain or the reason why a complaint might not be resolving.

Let’s talk a little bit about some of the more common foot and ankle injuries. Please keep in mind that there are a lot more to be mentioned. If you think you have a foot/ankle issue please consult with your doctor.

There are 3 types of ankle sprains that go from least severe to most severe. A Grade 1 ankle sprain is where the ligaments are stretched but have not torn. Grade 2 has a partial tear in the ligaments, and Grade 3 is a full tear.

A lot of our patients come in with ankle instability or loss of mobility. This could be from previous injuries, or it could be how your body was developed. Do you have flat feet? High arches? Bowed legs? All of these things effect how your body functions.

Lets talk a little about feet. I probably treat plantar fasciitis more than any other foot/ankle complaint. The plantar fascia is on the bottom of the foot and connects your heel to your toes. This fascia can become inflamed and as a result the body feels pain. Less commonly, but still prevalent, we see bursitis on the back of the heel which can interfere with your Achilles tendon.

There are many bones, ligaments, and muscles included in the mechanics of the leg. That is also why your foot or lower leg complaint can be connected to your lower back pain and vice versa.

Chiropractic care, as we mentioned in the first blog, is all about putting motion into your joints. In your foot alone there are 26 bones. Plus, the 2 bones that articulate from the lower leg. All of these bones form a joint, and all of these joints can be adjusted.

Your part is next!! Home care and maintenance is a big part in decreasing your pain and improving your recovery. Stretching, strengthening, rolling - lots of work you can do at home. Make sure to remind your doctor to give you instructions for more that you can do on your own. I know I tend to get so excited to treat I forget to give follow up instructions.

Please feel free to ask any further questions to your doctor. ***Also please note that this is an informational blog not to be used for diagnosing pain or dysfunction.***

Today isn’t a bad schedule. I’m steady so I should be staying busy this morning.
◦ Change shoes.

           ◦ Make sure my room is ready.
◦ Ok let’s go.
Patients are coming and going. I’m staying on time. Ok, where is my next patient? Why is that patient here this morning? They weren’t originally on my schedule. Wait, that 5 minutes to breathe isn’t in my schedule anymore. I really need a cup of coffee. Oh, water! I need to drink more water. Now I need to use the restroom. Who is this patient? That one is new. Now I have a new patient in that gap. What am I going to have for lunch? Oh shoot, I forgot to do that note. What therapy did that patient get? She needed a school excuse. I have to remember to sign that.
LUNCH
Here we go again. 4 patients and then a new one to start the afternoon. Things are going smooth. Patient number 3 has a new complaint. This is going to slow me down a little. My new patient is already here. I still have 2 more before them. I have to move faster. **Stay on schedule** “Yes my dog is perfect! Listen to what he did over the weekend. Let me show you photos!” (I couldn’t resist). Now I’m even more behind. I heard a patient say the parking lot is full. Good!! We are really staying busy today. It’s 4 o’clock. One more hour! I could really use a snack. Uh oh, I forgot to adjust that patients knee this morning. I need to make a note in her chart. What was my new patients name again? I need to look again so I remember. What’s for dinner tonight? Okay 2 more patients. Wait where is my next one? They’re late. Let’s catch up on notes. Ok why is this patient not getting better? What am I missing? Do we have any X-rays? Should we get X-rays? Let’s check this again. Let’s ask this question again. Let’s change up our treatment style. How many visits were they here so far? They’re getting frustrated with this. So am I!!
Phew. The day is over!
Ok, so that was a lot, right? That is what goes through my head on a typical day of work. When I (Dr. Bowser) was 16, I job shadowed Dr. Mahle for the first time. A couple things I remember are:
◦ He told me the schedule changes all the time.
◦ WOW that is a fast paced day.
Both of those things are still true. Our schedule changes more times than I can count in a day. And some days I never get to stop moving from beginning to end. When I was a waitress my brain did the same scattered thinking and forgetting and remembering. This is no different. There are days that we get behind. I know how frustrating it is to be a patient and have to wait after your scheduled time to see the doctor. I also know how it feels having a patient in my treatment room crying because of anything or everything. Even when I don’t have the time, I’m going to take the time. Because all of my patients deserve to have someone listen to them and be there for them.
The point that I’m trying to get to is this:
◦ We care about all of our patients.
◦ We try to stay on time with our schedules.
◦ Sometimes we get held up with a patient who needs more time and thought this particular day.
◦ We are doing our best to make sure we are helping everyone.
We love you all, and we hope that we can improve quality of life and decrease pain for all of our patients.

Hello all! We have decided to start a new blog for our office, hoping to give out some good info to anyone who wants to read it. To start off, we want to talk a little bit about what chiropractic actually is. We know a lot of people aren’t sure or have heard some misinformation.

Chiropractic care is all about putting motion into your joints when they aren’t moving as well as they should. You see, joints are supposed to move in all different motions - tilting forwards and backwards, tilting side to side, and rotating left to right. Because of that, we aren’t going bend, break, crunch, or snap you. The adjustments are done to a particular joint in order to help it move a certain direction. IT IS SUPPOSED TO MOVE LIKE THAT!! These adjustments are super fast but also very delicate and can even be performed on a newborn baby.

One major misconception everyone has heard is: “If I go once I’ll be going every week for life.” Well you might WANT to come back every week because of how good you feel! BUT the reason to keep coming back is to build muscle memory and let your body get used to how it should be able to move.

This is the typical layout of what you can expect:

             ◦ First appointment (about an hour) with history and exam

             ◦ Discussing diagnosis (the root of the problem) and treatment plan

             ◦ Getting adjusted!! And potentially doing some therapies

             ◦ Multiple appointments anywhere from 3-12 (this depends on how you respond to treatment)

             ◦ Home care stretches and strengthening exercises

The new season is a great reason to make and keep resolutions. Whether it’s eating right or cleaning out the garage, here are some tips for making and keeping resolutions.

    Make a list

Lists are great ways to stay on track. Write down some big things you want to accomplish and some smaller things, too.

    Check the list regularly

Don’t forget to check in and see how you’re doing. Just because you don’t achieve the big goals right away doesn’t mean you’re not making progress.

    Reward yourself

When you succeed in achieving a goal, be it a big one or a small one, make sure to pat yourself on the back.

    Think positively

Positive thinking is a major factor in success. So instead of mulling over things that didn’t go quite right, remind yourself of things that did.
